What FUE is

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is an advanced hair restoration technique. Follicular units are taken one by one from a donor area of your scalp and implanted in the thinning areas, following the direction, angle and natural design of your hairline. Dr. Castellanos uses a micromotor with sapphire blades and forceps.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Bogotá?

The price depends on the number of follicular units (grafts) you need, which is assessed by measuring the thinning area and the density of your donor area.

Grafts Price in USD
Up to 1,000 $4,500
1,000–1,500 $5,500

2,000–2,500 $7,500
2,500–3,000 $8,500

Your stay

Your 15 days in Bogotá

  1. Before you travel

Video consultation and blood tests: complete blood count, PT/INR, PTT, HIV, creatinine, and liver enzymes (AST and ALT).

  2. Day 1: procedure

    About 12 hours.

  3. Day 2: first check-up

The doctor reviews the implanted area.

  4. Days 2–15: heal in Bogotá

Mild redness, swelling and small scabs are expected. You will take antibiotics for 7 days and anti-inflammatories for 5 days, and follow specific care for the implanted area.

  5. Day 15: check-up and fly home

Final in-person check-up. You can fly from day 15.

  6. From home

Video check-ups at 8, 16 and 24 weeks and at one year. The final result is visible at about one year.

Who is a good candidate

Men and women with androgenetic (pattern) hair loss. If your hair loss is a different type, the doctor may recommend mesotherapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or medical treatment instead; see the dermatology treatments.

Aftercare and touch-ups

You have phone and medical support after you fly home. The most serious risk is an infection, which happens in less than 1% of cases, usually shows in the first 3 days, and is treated with a 7-day course of antibiotics. If, at one year, you and the doctor agree that the result is not satisfactory, a touch-up is done at no cost for the procedure.

Hair transplant questions

Will the transplanted hair fall out again?

Transplanted hair is taken from an area of your scalp that is genetically resistant to pattern baldness, and it keeps that trait in its new place.

How do you decide how many grafts I need, and how do you keep it natural?

The number is assessed by measuring the thinning area and analyzing the density of the donor area. To keep it natural, each follicle is implanted following the direction, angle and anatomical design of the hairline.

When can I fly home?

From day 15, after your final in-person check-up.

Do I need medication afterwards?

Antibiotics for 7 days and anti-inflammatories for 5 days after the procedure. If you also have mesotherapy or PRP, topical or oral medication for 6 to 12 months is usually needed for the best result.
