Questions about dermatology in Bogotá

Will removing a mole with a laser leave a scar?

The CO2 laser vaporizes the lesion layer by layer without touching the surrounding healthy skin, so in most cases the mark is invisible or nearly invisible, compared with removal with a scalpel. Moles sometimes need a second session; if so, there is no physician's fee for it.

How do lasers help with acne or surgical scars?

The CO2 laser renews the surface of the skin and softens the relief of the scar, while the Nd:YAG laser stimulates new collagen from the deeper layers and improves the color of the mark. How much it improves depends on the type of scar and the number of sessions.

Does the Nd:YAG laser remove sun spots, and how many sessions do I need?

It breaks the dark pigment into tiny particles that your body clears on its own. Most people see a clear change in 3 to 5 sessions.

What is the difference between Botox and hyaluronic acid?

They are not the same. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscle to soften expression lines. Hyaluronic acid adds volume and hydration where the face has lost support, such as the lips or under the eyes.

What are the risks?

The most serious risk with laser treatments is a skin infection, which happens in less than 1% of cases and is usually treated with a 7-day course of antibiotic cream or pills. With fillers, the most serious risk is a blood vessel problem, also under 1%; it is usually seen during the application and treated on the spot with hyaluronidase, which is included. Botulinum toxin and fillers are not done during pregnancy.

Do the doctors speak English?

Both can hold a full consultation in English. For technical explanations, a Lux Vitality coordinator can join you.

Do I need tests before traveling?

Most skin treatments only need photos beforehand. A hair transplant needs blood tests before surgery.
